Why is it sometimes fatal to touch the wires in a electric Power Line and not nearly so dangerous to come into contact with an electrostatic machine that is developing a much higher voltage?Can one be "shocked" by touching a wire carrying a very large current in an automobile starting system?why? Why are birds not injured by sitting upon a high potential power line?
Moving electrons are "current". Their force or ability to move is "voltage". Damage to living tissue is caused by electrons moving through it. Specifically, when enough outside electrons move through the nerves controlling a human heart, the heart's function is disrupted. Power lines have a great many electrons available to them and those electrons have enough voltage to make the move from the line through human skin and into the ground. Small electrostatic machines typically have very few electrons, not often enough to destroy nerves.
One can be shocked by any wire or item carrying current. When holding a 12 Volt Current carrying wire, there is a possible path from the wire through a person into the ground which is at 0 volts ("grounded" actually). So there is a voltage difference and a desire for the electrons to move out of the wire, but the insulation easily retains 12 volts of pressure. Household wiring easily retains 480 or more volts of pressure.
Birds are not harmed by sitting on a high potential wire because there is no place for any electrons to go once they enter the bird and because the bird is at nearly the same voltage as the wire. When a bird is on a wire, the bird is only connected to the air. Air is a poor conductor, leaving no place for electrons to go, meaning there can be no flowing current through the bird, thus no harm. Finally, because the electrons can go no where, the voltage in the bird becomes nearly equal to the voltage in the wire, making for only a small voltage difference between the wire and bird. With only a small voltage difference, insulation can keep many electrons from moving out of the wire in the first place, thus preventing a shock when the bird lands on the wire initially.
