What are (a) the parts of memory in the information-processing system and (b) what is the function of each?
a) Sensory, Short term, long term
Sensory - only hold information for a few seconds. Information such as sounds. Between the sensory memory and the short term memory, there's a process called "rehearsing" which has to take place in order for the information to be transferred to the short term memory. The STM on average holds about 7 items of information. With further rehearsal, the STM information will be transferred into the long term memory where if rehearsed enough will stay there. If information isn't rehearsed in any of the stages then decaying (forgetting) happens.
