Is plug in hybrid better than full electric?
The biggest advantage i see about plug in hybrid cars is that unlike full electric cars, when your battery runs out, you simply fill it with petrol and it works. So it doesn't have the range problems that full electric vehicles seem to have.
But then there's the added weight of the petrol engine which makes it less efficient than a full electric and also more expensive.
So are plug in hybrids the bridge to the future or are they just a bad idea?
Also would it be more efficient to remove the Battery Back and instead just have the gasoline engine powering a capacitor or the alternator directly powering an electric motor making it more efficient than the plug-in hybrid due to the reduced weight with the lack of a Battery Pack.
Or does that beat the point of having a car that can run on zero emissions battery power...??
Pure electric vehicles have an advantage over hybrids for several reasons:
1. Maintenance: A hybrid has the complexity of the ICE (internal combustion engine) on top of the electric hardware. Stuffing these together in a small car necessarily creates a space issue. This complicates maintenance and increases cost beyond what either would be alone.
2. Efficiency and weight: As you said, when you will operate the car on Electric Power alone you are carrying a heavy engine along with you. An electric motor is 95% efficient relative to the 30% efficiency of an ICE. But the ICE also requires a transmission. This adds weight and drive train inefficiencies so that the final efficiency is more like 85 to 90% for the electric vehicle and 15% for the vehicle with the ICE. Adding an ICE to an electric vehicle necessarily and substantially lowers its efficiency.
3. Limited utility: [of the ICE compared to the electric motor] An electric Motor Drive-train has full torque starting from 0 rpm and therefore does not require a transmission. It therefore starts and accelerates better than an ICE. The cruising capacity is equal to the ICE {which has only a narrow range of RPM where it has sufficient torque.} Only the range of the vehicle currently may have issues in some configurations. Therefore the ICE is only required to extend range for some situations with our current technology.
Logic dictates that we should therefore remove the ICE when it is not required for extended range. In a parallel hybrid it is not possible to remove the ICE as it is part of the power train. Only in a series hybrid will the engine be able to constantly run at it's most efficient speed and be sized as small as possible to keep the vehicle running. Being able to connect the ICE only when needed creates an efficiency of use and size that more than overcomes the inefficiency of transmission losses.
A purely electric vehicle may not fit the needs of every driver, however 80% of daily commutes are within the range of existing technology. When we manufacturer 100% of the vehicles for the use required by only 20% we create an inefficiency that translates to waste and pollution. A constant series hybrid without battery storage also loses the efficiencies of regenerative braking as there is no place to store a return charge.
A sometimes series hybrid can be created from an all electric vehicle by simply adding a genset trailer for those 20% of the people who will need extended range. These could be purchased by only those who needed them (saving the cost for others who did not) or rented as required. Here is an example. 1
For some people who can't quite get their heads around the idea of an electric vehicle a hybrid may be a transition. For most it is unnecessary. As replacing our fleet of vehicles incurs a cost in terms of energy and polluton it may be a costly transition that will delay the full implimentation of electric vehicles.
